~okeanos new feature: Create VMs from custom OS images
How to create VMs from custom images?
Hello ~okeanos alpha users,
Don't mean to interrupt, hopefully most of you are busy using the various aspects of the ~okeanos service such as the private networks between your VMs, the Pithos+ storage, the custom image creation, the fast netw-
Wait.
Rewind it.
Play it again.
Yes, you've heard right, custom image creation! If you've pondered how cool it'd be to upload and use your own machine on the ~okeanos service, then we have a treat for you.
In this guide you will find all the needed info, such as how-tos, common mistakes, examples etc. For a brief summary, you can also check our FAQ.
We'd appreciate if you experimented with this feature and sent us your feedback, bug reports or suggestions.
Enjoy,
the ~okeanos team

Synnefo + RADOS
We are happy to announce that Synnefo now supports completely unified storage (Files/Images/VM disks) over commodity hardware using RADOS. And since it's passed the testing phase, it is now heading to our production environment (~okeanos). And it scales!
But what does "completely unified storage" mean and why RADOS?
Let's take things from the beginning.
Introducing the Synnefo open source IaaS cloud platform
- Synnefo is here!
On this blog we will be posting all kinds of things concerning Synnefo,
from technical stuff, to practices running a large scale production
service, user stories and many more.
Synnefo is production-quality open source cloud software. It came out of
GRNET's need to provide a full-fledged Amazon-like cloud service that
would be very simple to use, even for completely unexperienced users.
The software has been designed for large scale installations and targets
commodity hardware.
Its development began in late 2010 from a small group of engineers and
since late 2011 it powers GRNET's cloud service:
http://www.okeanos.io
At the Synnefo site, we have two mailing lists:
(*) For users: (synnefo@googlegroups.com)
(*) For developers: (synnefo-devel@googlegroups.com)
FOSDEM 2013
Current production ~okeanos
Rolling hardware and software upgrades
- Node evacuations with live VM migrations
- Cross-datacenter move: Intel->AMD, no VM downtime
- IP renumbering of all VMs
>2600VMs, >1800users
Ready to scale in beta
- 7 Ganeti clusters currently, move to >10.000 VMs

Θέμα: [~okeanos] Upgrading ~okeanos, new features coming!
Hello ~okeanos users,
We are happy to announce that on Monday, Mar 4 2013 10:00-15:00 we will be doing a major upgrade to the ~okeanos service, with a new version of the Synnefo software.
During the upgrade, the ~okeanos service Web UI and APIs will be down, however as usual your VMs and Pithos+ files should remain unaffected.
After the upgrade, you will be able to use some really interesting new features, which we will be showing off in an upcoming blog post after Monday.
Thanks for your understanding,
the ~okeanos team

Introducing the new "Usage" feature
As you may already have noticed, there have been some changes to your "accounts" page, from where you used to manage your profile, change your password and send us feedback. First of all, we changed its name. From "accounts" it is now called ~okeanos dashboard. That's because, this page will be enhanced with additional features in the future and will not stay limited to managing just your profile information. Eventually, it will be turned into a generic dashboard that will allow you to do much more.
Well, be a little patient. Not only, have we introduced the feature, we are about to increase your limits for System disk and RAM too!
Stay tuned, new flavors at the creation wizard are coming soon.
Enjoy,
the ~okeanos team

Δύο ακόμα βελτιώσεις.
New flavors, higher limits, increased flexibility!
Starting today, new VM flavors are available at the creation wizard, that let you create VMs with more CPUs, more RAM and larger System Disks.
This means that you can now create up to 2 VMs that cumulatively take up to 8 CPUs, 8GB of RAM and 100GB of System Disk. Using the new flavors you can create various combinations for maximum flexibility. Finally, from now on, you can also see how many resources you have left right there in the wizard's tab. Without the need of going back to your "Usage" tab everytime you want to create a new VM.
Enjoy and use wisely,
the ~okeanos team
Synnefo plugin for Thunderbird
Starting in version 13, Thunderbird added support for online storage services through Filelink. It allows you to upload attachments to an online storage service and then replaces the attachment in the message with a link. Filelink can be configured to use many of the well known storage services out there and it can now be configured to support Synnefo deployments, too.
We created the ~okeanos filelink plugin for Thunderbird, to support our ~okeanos public cloud service. It uses the Astakos API for authenticating the user and the Pithos API for uploading and publishing the attachments. It is easy to use as it requires only the authentication token from the user. Also, it can be configured to support any Synnefo installation by specifying the correct Astakos and Pithos endpoint URLs.

X2Go now on ~okeanos images
We are happy to announce that as of today, all Linux desktop images provided under the "System" tab of the creation wizard, have been updated to have the X2Go Server pre-installed. X2Go is a great tool that allows you to connect remotely to your VMs and actually see their GUI. It's the same as using Remote Desktop (RDP) on Windows VMs. What's more, you 'll find that it is also very fast and secure.
For those that have tried NX in the past, we definitely suggest you give X2Go a shot. It's far easier to install and you can even use your SSH keys. From now on, X2Go is the recommended way to connect graphically to your VMs on ~okeanos.
For more information on how to use and install the X2Go client, please check out our user guide.
More colors, less hassle.
Enjoy,
the ~okeanos team

Archipelago: Storage Backend
When it comes to pushing the boundaries of speed, one has to rethink the basic concepts of the backend storage technology. And if we want to talk about cloud elasticity, one has to wonder:
How can I spawn a VM with 100GB System Disk in seconds?
Or a cluster of 100 VMs in a few minutes?
Well, enter Archipelago, a new, innovative Storage Backend for your VM data. Archipelago literally means "a cluster of islands", distinct from one another yet often with the same culture and morphology.

Πολύ καλή δουλειά!
Introducing "Projects"
~okeanos gives the opportunity to Greek Academic or Research Organizations/Institutions/Faculty to run their own projects remotely on virtual infrastructure.
Simple, fast, and with minimal to no cost at all.
Unsurprisingly, for a while now we have been receiving requests such as:
"Can I have more VMs to share with my students for a CPU-intensive semester assignment?"
"Can I have more RAM for a research experiment that will last approximately two months?"
The above shows that there are groups or sole users that need more resources for a specific amount of time. This is exactly why we created the "Projects" feature. And it's easy too! Simply write down the summary of your project, its start and termination dates, its members, the resources you will need and that's it! Soon, you and your colleagues will be ready to deploy!
This means that the application must be well-written and clearly state the reason why this project is needed, to have a good chance of acceptance.
We sincerely hope this feature will prove useful to the Greek Academic community.
Spread the word,
the ~okeanos team

Synnefo v0.13 Released
Hello Synnefo users,
We are happy to announce that Synnefo v0.13 is finally out!
During this release cycle, which took a long time indeed, we made some major changes in Synnefo. The biggest one was that we merged most of the Synnefo components in a single repository allowing for a more uniform approach and aligned versioning.
[…]
We are planning for a stable v0.14 in which we will be focusing on code cleanup, documentation and stabilisation without introduction of major features. We hope to have v0.14 work out-of-the-box with the stock Ganeti 2.7 once its officially out, so there will be no need for applying patches or custom Ganeti builds. Finally, for v0.15 we have some nice new features already on the way that we will announce in a following post.
We are looking forward to your feedback,
the Synnefo team

GanetiCon 2013: First Google Ganeti Conference
Hello everybody,
We are very pleased to announce that this year we are co-organizing the first Google Ganeti Conference: GanetiCon 2013.
The conference will take place between 3-5 September 2013 in Athens, Greece.
The first GanetiCon will be a developers oriented conference, and it will mostly include design talks and discussions about new features and future plans. It will also probably feature an advanced Ganeti workshop, depending on user demand. Additionally, anybody who is interested in:
• learning how other companies/institutions use Ganeti
• checking out how large scale Ganeti deployments look like
• glimpsing the product roadmap of Ganeti
• contributing to future design of Ganeti
• obtaining help with specific Ganeti issues
should definitely attend.
Most developers of the Ganeti and Synnefo team will be there, so it will be a great chance to meet you all in person, and answer all your questions. More detailed information about the venue and program will be announced soon. Stay tuned.
See you all in Athens!
on behalf of the Synnefo team,
Constantinos
