G-Cloud Programme

    Government Cloud Strategy

    Cloud computing has brought about a step change in the economics and sustainability of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Government is committed to the adoption of cloud computing and delivering computing resources. The G-Cloud is an iterative programme of work to achieve this which will deliver fundamental changes in the way the public sector procures and operates ICT.

    G-Cloud / G-Host / PSN – what’s the difference?

    The G-Cloud strategy outlines in more detail how we will:

    • achieve large, cross government economies of scale;

    • deliver ICT systems that are flexible and responsive to demand in order to support government policies and strategies;

    • take advantage of new technologies in order to deliver faster business benefits and reduce cost;

    • meet environmental and sustainability targets;

    • allow government to procure in a way that encourages a dynamic and responsive supplier marketplace and supports emerging suppliers.

Danish Agency for Digitisation
    Good Basic Data For Everyone

    The Agency for Digitisation has been established to speed up the digitisation processes required to modernise the Danish welfare society towards 2020.

    The Agency for Digitisation is in charge of the digitisation of Denmark and is responsible for the implementation of the government's digital ambitions and for ensuring national dissemination of welfare care technology in the public sector.

    Digitisation is a cornerstone of the necessary modernisation of the public sector towards 2020, and the overarching strategy for digitisation is based on a binding agreement and cooperation between state, regions and municipalities.

    Citizens and businesses will experience a better and more flexible service. For businesses new growth opportunities will arise and the internal workings of the public sector will be continuously improved. The many IT projects, which are required to successfully digitise Denmark, must be implemented professionally and with a focus on user needs. This focused and ambitious digitisation effort will transform public sector services and free up resources that can be used for other purposes.

    To accomplish the ambitious task that has been set, the Agency for Digitisation always works – heart and soul - towards the goal of efficiency. We perform effectiveness analyses, and we develop business cases and plans for profit realisation, collaborative models, support programmes, IT policy, and technology.

Welcome to GOV.UK
    The new place to find government services and information

    The release today of GOV.UK, the new home of government services and information, proves that we can deliver digital public services at a fraction of the price of previous government IT projects. GOV.UK will cost taxpayers up to £70m less per year than the services it replaces, and substantial further savings will be achieved as more departments and agencies move on to the platform.

    Savings are important, of course, but what singles out GOV.UK as unique in government is the fact that it has been created putting its users’ needs at its heart, not the needs of government. It has been planned, written, organised and designed around what users need to get done, not around the ways government want them to do it. The build of GOV.UK was guided by this principle at every step, and as a result delivers a service that is simpler, clearer and faster for users. Being built and tested in public meant that we could take the views of real users into account and feed them into successive improved versions.

    Today marks the start of a new way of delivering public services digitally. GOV.UK is a platform for future digital innovation. In stark contrast to the way IT has been delivered in government in the past, GOV.UK can rapidly accommodate new standards for development and security, catering to emerging technologies and user requirements quickly and effectively. It has been built the way Amazon built Amazon, and in the way that BA transformed their online business, by being agile, iterative and focused on users. GOV.UK has also been built using open source technology, which means we don’t have to pay expensive software licensing costs.

    The release of GOV.UK is a key element in the Digital by Default agenda. Digital by Default aims to transform public services online – making them better and cheaper for taxpayers and more effective and efficient for government. This approach was reaffirmed in the Civil Service Reform Plan, which we published in June. In it we set out a series of practical actions which will help make central government smaller, faster, more unified, more accountable for delivery, more commercially capable and more digital.

    All that’s left to say is, go try out GOV.UK and tell us what you think – as many of you already have done while we have been creating it. We look forward to hearing your views.

The End of the Beginning / The Highest Jump
    Today’s launch of 18 departmental digital strategies is a statement of ambition for the reform of public services.

    These strategies describe how each department will change to become a digital by default organisation, offering digital services that are so good people prefer them. They also contain hard, actionable deliverables, and do not shirk from tackling the daunting task of transforming key parts of the state’s services. From future elections, to tax and social care, there is no ambiguity here.

    In November the Government Digital Strategy set out a shared vision for digital by default government; our digital services must be so straightforward and convenient people prefer to use them. This strategy committed government departments to 14 actions and was written by Digital Leaders representing every central government department. It was praised at the time, I believe rightly, for both its ambition and its bias towards action.

    To get a true sense of the scale of change being proposed, I recommend reading all 18 strategies. But if you’re short of time we’ve published summaries of how departments will respond to each of the 14 agreed actions.

    It will take some time to digest these strategies, and in Government we have much work to do to build capacity, attract the right skills and suppliers and remove some of the existing process obstacles. But for the first time, Government now has a collective ambition level which befits the expectations of our users in a digital age.

Technology Strategy Board
    Thirteen business-led research and development projects that will address business and technology challenges impeding the adoption of cloud computing are to share £5 million of government support.

    Previous studies backed by the UK’s innovation agency, have shown that three overarching issues present a challenge to adoption for many organisations – interoperability, resilience of data and identity assurance. These projects will look to demonstrate how new or improved value chains and networks can be created, and show where value can be increased by offering innovative information, content and services in the cloud. Including investment by the participating companies the total value of the projects is around £10 million.
